I think the RPM for Mandrake is called "kernel-2.4.x-src" or something like
that. It should be about 20-30MB, so it won't be difficult to find. Hope it
helps. Another option is to download the kernel source from ftp.kernel.org,
but I don't know if this is a good choice, because maybe Mandrake people
patched the kernel you're using and incompatibility issues may occur. Install
the RPM of your kernel source if possible.
The full kernel sources aren't necessary, just the kernel headers. Look around for an RPM of the headers.
Debian will let you install just the headers, and asla compiles just fine on my Debian machine.
I've just looked on the mandrake install cd and there is an rpm called kernel-headers-2.4.18-41mdk.i586.rpm, which is all well and good until I type a uname -r command and get 2.4.19-16mdk. Not having done this type of thing before I'm taking the (sensibly) paranoid approach and posting here first. Is this a normal Linux thing to use older versions of the headers? i.e. were the differences between version *.18 and *.19 relatively trivial?
Alternatively there is an rpm named kernel-2.4.19.16mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm. Will this have the source and headers or just the object code?
Thank you
Garvin.
