I have no /dev/dsp or /dev/sound/dsp this is probably bad...right?
That's fatal!
I'm afraid I don't know what answer to give you. The components under /dev/sound should appear automatically and the /dev/*dsp* links should also appear when you start alsa and load the modules.
I assume that you actually use devfs?
ps -A | grep devfs
reveals some running process called "devfsd" (the d at the end stands for "daemon")? Also, you should be able to start and stop alsa thru an init file in a directory similar to /etc/init.d/alsa, by issuing the command "/etc/init.d/alsa start|stop|restart|force-restart". Rebooting is a last resort. The modules should load and unload automatically, or at least they do on Debian and I haven't tried RH or Mandrake with alsa.
