If you have up2dated yor kernel or installed a kernel rpm you will have problems that we get back to.
Else recompile the alsa and do this.
Completely remove old modules in this directory by
typing
rm -rf /lib/modules/(your kernel version)/misc
> Compile the driver with these options.
> --with-kernel=(your kernel source dir path)
--with-moddir=/lib/modules/(your kernel version)/misc
> --with-cards=(youur sound card chipset name)
type ./configure --help to see the
> rest of the options. And while you are in the driver
> dir type ./snddevices
Compile alsa-libs with the
> kernel option above. No options are needed on alsa
> utils. Edit modules.conf (look at examples in
> google.com) Then modprobe soundcore, modprobe

I have Debian SID (unstable) booted from LoadLin with modular ALSA,
and a ymfpci (ymf740) sound. My kernel is 2.2.20. Back in my stable
days, I had ALSA working, but sporadically. Often, my KDE would error
out, generating a SIGSEV fault. The games would sometimes play the
sound, and sometimes wouldn't. So anyhow, I decided to upgrade
everything to the latest to get a more consistent performance.
Now, however, nothing plays. During the bootup process, I see the

ymfpci.o --> is found with Interrupt 11
ALSA generates an error: "modprobe: can't locate module snd".
Now, it is possiible that during the upgrade something got
uninstalled and not properly reinstalled. Or this could be just a
bug... I dunno.
But can anyone offer me suggestions? When I try to google, I can't
get through the dross. There's too many other errors involving those
words and more.
