Excellent stuff. I hope I am still alive to to see/hear this happen :-) I'm really interested in collaborative music but not especially real-time jamming, although that could be fun. For a number of people to remotely collaborate with any reliability they all must be able to hear the same instruments at the same volume, so yes, we need a flexible system to maintain at least a single decent "reference soundfont", aside from any number of other individualised sounds. My main aim to is to see some kind of soucreforgesque based song project site where over time various projects release new versions of the essentially the same material. Rather than a "jam session" being the main event and whatever is produced during that session are "THE results" (as well as a good time had by all), rather, the audio projects (could be narratative HOWTOs/documentaries/news) could evolve over time and be open to anyone to participate... perhaps even on a Wiki like anonymous editing level for some projects.
