Hallo!
First of all, mpg123 is a player and a lib. You better compile it using
the oss-interface. That should be enough. But I haven't compiled it myself
for a long time. Because I'm using the suse-linux-distro and there it is
included. But mpg123 also can pipe output (int raw-format) to stdout. Then
you can do something like:
  mpg123 file.mp3 | my_favourite_player
That player should support input from stdin.
Then there is freeamp. And this is really great. It's best to use
standalone, infact I don't know if you can embed it into another app. But
this should compile weith the newest alsa-version. If you get something
like a gtk-warning or so: edit the freeamp-preferences file which should
be stored in your home-directory, in a dir called:
.freeamp or so. There you can find a line for the user-interface (ui).
Another good choice to embed mpg123 is ecasound www.eca.cx/ecasound
Read the infos on the page first, ecasound is a multitrack hdd
recording/fx-processing/mixing-tool, but it works with mpg123 in the
background and ecasound supports alsa9.
There is also mp3blast, this works with ncurses, if you are blind it
may be that you don't think of it as a very good solution - I always find
it a little bit hard to use.
The quickest of those mentioned is definitely mpg123. The program itself
is not very comfortable (no forward and so on), but it is really quick and
good to use in other contexts. The most comfortable might be mp3blast, if
useable, it supports playlists, forward/rewind and all the things you
would like. But I think also freeamp supports playlists and
forward/rewind is definitely supported. I believe it is faster than
mp3blast, because there is not so much overhead.
  Kindest regards
     Julien
