I totally agree, I am very new to linux and even though I have experience
with C and other languages, I haven't been able to get my Dell to make
sounds under red hat 6.1. The sound card is a yamaha ds-xg, and i followed
the how to with no problems, no everything seems should work, but doesn't.

I think especially a how to of alsa addressing specific distributions (and
red hat in my case) would be very helpful, i have looked for it for days
without any luck.

for example, the conf.modules i edited was blank, does it mean it was not
being used? i mean a newbie is a newbie, not an unexperienced linux
administrator or programmer.

Thanks to all the people who work on how to's and manuals. Despite the
difficulty of linux, some of us are still trying...
