I don't know, if it is still valid, but I remember that the framebuffer
stuff was a real latency killer a while ago. In the early LL patches by A.
Morton, there always where some DDT's ("Don't Do That") regarding the
framebuffer console included. I don't use any fb with my matrox card, maybe
that's what's causing you this problems and keeps my system responsive...

Just a guess.
