Try using "alsamixer" to get a nicer interface so's you can see what you're doing, first of all (I find it helps, anyway :). Then start a sample on loop-play so you know you should be hearing something, and then unmute channels in alsamixer until you get sound. Once you've got sound, do an "alsactl store" to save your sound settings, and add a line "alsactl restore" to your startup scripts somewhere after the ALSA drivers are loaded.
