It's called 'sndconfig' :) Maybe it's just not installed?

I don't understand the sentence above: which (ALSA or OSS/Free) module are you 
referring to? What does lsmod show? What kernel are you running?

Maybe you just haven't installed the ALSA drivers? Try (as root) 
'modprobe snd-card-es1688' .

Let the list know how it goes. Btw, I read that Slackware is not a _newbie_
friendly distribution. SuSE, Mandrake, RedHat and others are and try 
(sometimes unsuccesfully) to automagically set up your sound. HTH,
