I belive that kde does not have direct support for alsa 0.9.x so you should use oss for now. ALSA has oss emulation which works perfectly fine for most things. With sblive and midi you need to do some tricks with sound fonts. There are plenty of descriptions of how to do this in the archives. Including the old archives hosted by alsa-project.org. You can access the new geocrawler archives only by going through the links on the main webpage. AFAIK if you go direct to the sourceforge page you can't access them. Don't recall why though. > > cat /proc/asound/sndstat: > > [turgon@minas-aran alsa-driver-0.9.0beta9]$ cat /proc/asound/sndstat > Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.9.0beta9 emulation code) > Kernel: Linux minas-aran.mike-leone.com 2.4.14 #7 Fri Nov 16 20:48:55 > EST 2001 i686 > Config options: 0 > > Installed drivers: > Type 10: ALSA emulation > > Card config: > Sound Blaster Live! at 0xd000, irq 5 > > Audio devices: > 0: EMU10K1 (DUPLEX) > > Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG > > Midi devices: > 0: EMU10K1 MPU-401 (UART) > > Timers: > 7: system timer > > Mixers: > 0: mixer00 > > [turgon@minas-aran alsa-driver-0.9.0beta9]$ cat /proc/asound/version > Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.9.0beta9. > Compiled on Nov 19 2001 for kernel 2.4.14 with versioned symbols. > > /etc/modules.conf: > > # OSS sound device; comment out, if using ALSA > # alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1 > > alias char-major-116 snd > alias char-major-14 soundcore > options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 > > alias snd-card-0 snd-card-emu10k1 > alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 > alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss > alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss > alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss > alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss > alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss > > alias snd-synth-midi snd-seq-midi > alias snd-seq-midi snd-synth-emu10k1 > > lsmod (sound entries): > > snd-synth-emu10k1 5312 0 (autoclean) (unused) > snd-synth-emux 28832 0 (autoclean) [snd-synth-emu10k1] > snd-seq-midi-emul 4976 0 (autoclean) [snd-synth-emux] > snd-seq-virmidi 3656 0 (autoclean) [snd-synth-emux] > snd-seq-oss 23584 0 (unused) > snd-seq-midi-event 2856 0 [snd-seq-virmidi snd-seq-oss] > snd-seq 40268 2 [snd-synth-emux snd-seq-midi-emul snd-seq-virmidi >snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event] > snd-pcm-oss 45696 0 > snd-mixer-oss 10784 1 [snd-pcm-oss] > snd-card-emu10k1 1984 1 > snd-emu10k1 55392 0 [snd-synth-emu10k1 snd-card-emu10k1] > snd-pcm 59936 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-emu10k1] > snd-timer 11776 0 [snd-seq snd-pcm] > snd-rawmidi 13856 0 [snd-seq-virmidi snd-emu10k1] > snd-ac97-codec 24992 0 [snd-emu10k1] > snd-util-mem 1584 0 [snd-synth-emux snd-emu10k1] > snd-hwdep 4544 0 [snd-emu10k1] > snd-seq-device 4208 0 [snd-synth-emu10k1 snd-synth-emux snd-seq-oss >snd-seq snd-card-emu10k1 snd-rawmidi] > snd 32648 0 [snd-synth-emux snd-seq-midi-emul snd-seq-virmidi >snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-card-emu10k1 >snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-rawmidi snd-ac97-codec snd-util-mem snd-hwdep >snd-seq-device] > soundcore 3652 10 [snd] > > So ... what am I missing, to get MIDI devices listed, so that I can play > MIDI files thru my sound card? > > Also, why would KDE not output sound if I set the Sound I/O Method to > ALSA? > > System sounds work; RealPlayer works; XMMS works; etc. KDE Media Player > does NOT (not that I really need it) > > Any help greatly appreciated. > -- > > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > Michael J.
