+1 on checking the IMAP server, this is a common setting for some because
the iPhone doesn't handle non-auto expunging on delete and it's the most
common IMAP client.
In GMail this is something you can enable/disable along with a variety of
other settings, like only showing the latest 1,000 or doing "archive"
rather than delete permanently.
