I'm not sure that it's an all-or-nothing situation in terms of economic output. 
If you could create AI system that could do the job of any human with an IQ of 
100 or less, that's half the population (not necessarily half the economic 
output, though) out of a job. If Ben's project could produce an AI system that 
could do that, I'd say that's significant progress. Perhaps not such a great 
situation for the workers, though, and also ignoring the effect of eliminating 
approximately half of the consumer population.
