Well, it is labeled "opinion".

It conveniently ignores the situations in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and northern Poland, which all had significant portions of their populace that thought of themselves as Russian. Allof those areas have completely shifted toward NATO in the last ~~ 30 years or so. Perhaps the difference in Ukraine was that they had a larger portion, and maybe more concentrated part  who still thought of themselves as Russian.

Maybe a better analogy would be Alaska, which we purchased from Russia just after the Civil War. What if Putin decided he wanted that back too?

Northern Poland does feel some heat from Russia, but not quite as intense (yet).

I like to flip the script.

Suppose Arabs in Michigan wanted to split off into a new state with limited political autonomy from the USA, and that we could expect that new state to be allied with, and supported by, Syria and Palestine.  Also suppose Joe Biden signed a deal agreeing to make it happen.  Now we've elected Donald Trump, and DJT doesn't follow through with the agreement.   Are Syria and Palestine now justified to invade Michigan?  Of course it's impossible, but the point is to look at the other perspective.   Sometimes the situation is so alien that I can't manage it, but in this case, I still have more sympathy for Ukraine than Russia.

That was a good article with details we don't usually see, and I do appreciate you sharing it.
