But you said if work reimburses you for your personal phone. That’s different.

If I add $50 to your paycheck every month to defray the cost of using your
personal cellphone at jobsites to make calls and take photos, that’s more like
a per diem allowance for people traveling on business. Or WFH employees who
maybe get a company laptop but also an allowance to cover some or all of the
cost of home Internet.

I do tell any remote workers with company issued laptops to assume there is
“employee monitoring software” on it that can spy on them to whatever level of
detail the company wants. As little as monitoring hours worked to as much as
screenshots, video and audio, keystrokes, copying files, apps inventory, you
name it. I’ve also noticed large uploads every few minutes which I assume is
backups or a complete HDD image so they have all the data in case you take the
laptop with you, or erase incriminating files before you return it.

If work pays for it, can track you, can wipe it, has control over your apps,
etc. It's a work phone.

If work reimburses you for your personal phone, then it's just a personal phone
in name only. It might as well be a work phone.

For sure, there are technical means, but often the challenges aren't technical.

Say personally you love XYZ app. Work determines it to be a security risk and
removes it. Who wins that fight?

Say they have a personal Dropbox that automatically uploads work files to their
space as opposed to (or in addition to) the work OneDrive or Google Drive?

If work always wins those situations, then why even have a personal phone,
you're just carrying around a work phone that you pay for.

I'm not sure on the technical details, but A lady from church worked at a large
healthcare company in accounting. She was allowed to have her work email on
her personal phone, but she had to turn her PERSONAL phone (Iphone) into IT to
get it setup. When she left that job, she was Required to turn her PERSONAL
phone into IT to get it wiped. She was responsible for backing up all of her
her photos, etc, before turning it in to be wiped, this was all spelled out and
approved by her before she made the decision to get her email on her personal
phone.

So as long as it's spelled out to the employee, it sounds like there are
options that are vetted to allow personal devices access to the corporate
network.

<https://www.facebook.com/ICSIL> Using Google stuff here, any of the "work
profile" or "G Suite account" data gets wiped if it ever reaches connectivity.
Doesn't prevent any local cache from getting read, but you have to draw the
line somewhere.

Not like a company provided phone would prevent theft.
