This all reminds me of when I worked for a company probably no one
remembers: Data General (AKA DG). They were a spin-off of the old Digital
Equipment Corporation (later called just DEC).

DG designed and built one of the original low-cost fixed hard drives. The
thing was about a foot tall, and slid on rails into a 19" cabinet. I don't
recall what the capacity was, but it was probably around 10MB (that gives
you an idea of what vintage it was). DG called it the NovaDisk. Some of you
might also recall that in certain latin countries the word "Nova" means
"Doesn't go". Oh man, truer words could not be spoken.

It had a large spring that would pull back the R/W heads in the event of
power off. Great idea, except that when it "sprung" into action, the R/W
heads would bounce up & down on their way off the discs. Eeesh.

Our field office had more dead NovaDisks than working ones in storage. What
a pure crap product.

The joke eventually became that a NovaDisk might be good as a boat anchor,
except that they would intermittently float.
