The Candida Auris fungus has been around for as long as we know. Possibly millenia; possibly since before the dinosaurs departed the earth. For as long as we've known, the fungus has not been able to survive in temperatures above about ~~ 77-80 degrees (F). However, if there is a sustained period of higher temperatures, they conjecture that the few that survive get conditioned to tolerate a slightly higher temperature. Rinse, and repeat to the point that they are getting up into the mid to higher 90-degree temps.
At the same time, the standard temperature for people has been
gradually decreasing. According to the show, in developed
countries, the standard temperature for a healthy human has
decreased from 98.6 to now the more common 97.5.
So the fungus is tolerating higher temps, and our thermostats are operating at a lower temp. Put the two together, and there are many cases now where the fungus is living inside people's bodies.
Can't kill a fungus with a vaccine. Guess we're going to have to inject bleach. Who knew?!?

Without listening to it, where does it come from? Yes, I like Radio Lab. I like This American Life and Snap Judgement more. The Moth is good too. Lately I have been listening to In The Dark, similar To Serial. It is a mixed blessing for insomnia, half the time they are so interesting they keep me awake.

I'm a big fan of Radiolab, and I think Chuck is too. This episode caught my attention, and may be a harbinger of doom for us all. The Candida Auris fungus may be difficult to become infected with, but the fatality rate is 20%-60%, and there is no vaccine.
