I thought I'd throw out a response for those who are considering Sharepoint, but haven't bought it yet.
After seeing the impact that Sharepoint has had on our customers (4-10x storage growth, difficulty in backing up, etc), we're examining a competing tool called ClearSpace to meet the needs of Sharepoint and more. It's based on Java Server Pages, and has group-based content management, document management, AD integration, Blogs, Wikis, forums, an email <-> forum gateway, and a very nice user interface.)
