That depends upon what you change it to: if you change it to a low
enough level to get within the size of your sb_max value (if you
are using AIX, as Gyula pointed out) then it should work.
We have had a report of a Sun system user encountering this condition
when there was a configuration mismatch between the Sun system and
the ethernet switch.
