If you don't intend to have anything hanging out with a direct internet connection, just use whatever looks cool and is supported by the hardware you have at hand. If your installation is going to be subject to transmitting packets across the internet, 9front has better crypto. As has been mentioned recently in this list, porting that crypto back to 9legacy may be a fun way to get your hands dirty, if you're into that sort of thing. Either way you're not really missing anything by picking one to play with, and if you feel like you are, it will still be there when you feel like trying the other one out.
