The long ls command worked, as in it created the links, but they didn't work properly under the ZFS SMB share.
They didn't work as in, on a remote Linux box, I could execute ls and see them, but I couldn't change in; permission issues. (despite having the correct ownership) and also on the remote linux box, the GUI file browser couldn't even see the folders. By changing in to the directory and then executing the ls command relative to that point, everything worked.
