Other than the spontaneous combustion issue (which was heavily covered by the press a couple of years ago, and resulted in many product recalls), it seems that the main advantage of using external power is to avoid needing to shut down the server and open the chassis if a battery goes bad. Most servers are not designed to be serviced in this way while they remain running.
