The problem with storing 'zfs send' arises when you try to 'zfs recv'
the stored stream after the opportunity to resend another stream in
case of problems is passed.  This problem applies to both what you
call ``backups'' and to what you call ``archives''.

I do agree that 'zfs send' can be used as part of a backup strategy, as
long as it's used to move data to a 'zfs recv', not to store it.

I don't agree with what you seem to imply, that 'zfs send' streams can
be stored as long as the backup isn't what you call ``archival''.  I
am not sure what was the point of your bringing up the distinction---I
think it's bad either way.
