BTW, flash drives have a filesystem too; AFAIK, it's usually pretty much just FAT32, which is garbage, but widely supported, so that you can plug them in just about anywhere. In most cases, one can put some other filesystem on them, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that that might not work well (or at all) with some of them.
