Detaching mirrors is actually easy with ZFS. I've done in several times. Look at: zpool detach pool device The problem here is that the detached side loses all information about the ZPool, the ZFS filoe system(s), etc. This really bit me in the butt when I was trying to figure out which of two HDD really failed (the failed disk worked "sort of"). The part that isn't there yet is shrinking, say, a 50% used 500GB pool down to a 300GB pool.
