Both do not only that but even if you have no redundancy in the pool you still use checksuming. That is what has actually happened in this case. The checksuming in ZFS has detected errors but due to the lack of redundancy at that ZFS layer it isn't able to correct them. In a raidz or mirroring configuration correction is possible.
