Public bug reported:

I was trying to figure out why a system was failing to authenticate using some
authentication middleware. Using the debugger I was able to figure out that
there was no 'external' auth plugin registered (the admin was trying to figure
it out themselves and had made several mistakes). This would have been easy to
figure out if only the logs had mentioned that there wasn't an 'external' auth
plugin registered.
