So the two 42s work identically except for the "blurriness" of the
new Panasonic, and same whether using VGA, DVI or HDMI cable? Or, are
objects obviously differently sized on the two 42s?
Objects are the same size. I've successfully used with the old 42"
using VGA and HDMI (and DVI on a 24" monitor); the new 42" only has
HDMI.
How does it do connected to TV antenna or cabul or sat converter box? Does a
TV box let you select 1080p without any sign of any error message or distortions?
I'm not using a DE, just a WM (dwm).
Not one I've ever used. Which distro?
ArchLinux
It seems that your TV and probably its EDID thinks it's a ~32" screen
model, which easily could result in blurriness on an actual 42"
screen. If your free return period on that Panasonic hasn't expired
yet and you're not married to it, I'd take it back and get something
else. At least try an exchange in case it's an individual defect
rather than a model defect.
I have two weeks to return it.
Locally (e.g. easy)? If so, do it. Retailers and manufacturers need to know
when they are letting dysfunction out the door.
Google your model number and see if there are complaints, recall, or other
clues to trouble.
You may be able to get around your problem using an xorg.conf file
(or xrandr) to override EDID. I do it more often than not, regardless
whether EDID is good or not, usually to force my choice of DPI via
DisplaySize. However, it's not so simple a task to set up xorg.conf
on multi display systems. See:
http://fm.no-ip.com/Share/DisplaySize and
http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Linux/Xorg/xorg.conf-dualheadminimal
I was going down the path of setting up the xorg.conf files when someone
in the IRC channel suggested setting the DisplaySize wouldn't solve my
issue.
Here is the xorg.conf file I'm using: http://sprunge.us/fMhS
Knowing what's there doesn't help a lot without seeing Xorg.0.log from using it.
AFAIK, UseEdidDpi is only for proprietary NVidia drivers, and official Xorg
releases have no option to specify DPI directly, while DisplaySize should
work almost without exception.
