We tried out the version with the personal edition
license (since ours is an open source project, we would fall into this category) and were pleased with the software. We did notice, however, that some functions do not seem to work, and were curious if these are only available in the professional edition license (see screenshot). Or are additional steps required to activate shortcuts in the personal edition?

This would happen in Professional Edition too.

The "Customize Configuration" menu entries depicted in the screenshot you've attached to your email are disabled ("grayed") because there is no XMLmind XML Editor (XXE for short) configuration associated to the document you have opened (<office:forms>).

Creating and associating a configuration to custom documents such as yours is explained here:

Chapter 2. Writing a configuration file for XXE
https://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/configure/config_file.html

Note that most of the work when writing a configuration for XXE consists in 1) writing a CSS stylesheet to get rid of visible tags, 2) to a lesser extend, understanding our documentation and putting it into use.

If shortcuts are only available in the professional edition, we would consider buying two licenses/units for our project. Our research project is being carried out at three higher education institutions, and the project researchers are all involved in teaching at those institutions. Would we qualify for a rebate for educational organizations, as stated in the price list on your website?

It's simply half the normal price whatever the product, the license of the quantity.

Perhaps you could give me further examples of or details about the potential benefits of the professional license over against the personal one, based on feedback from other research projects in the field of humanities/philological text editions, which could further help us to make an informed decision about the right XMLmind license.

Please compare column "XML Editor Professional Edition" to column "XML Editor Personal Edition" in this table:

https://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/which_editor.html

Unless you plan to develop an extensive configuration for XMLmind XML Editor, including a facility to convert your custom documents to formats such as HTML, EPUB, Web Help, RTF, ODT, DOCX, PDF, etc, I'm not sure you would benefit anything from purchasing Professional Edition.
