I've been evaluating the software further and it is going well. One thing - we

this nicely, but would it be possible to convert to CHAPTER instead of BOOK ?

Yes, this is done quite easily from within XMLmind XML Editor.

You must use the W2X wizard to generate a custom conversion specification (which is a plain text file containing a number of w2x command-line options; http://www.xmlmind.com/w2x/_distrib/doc/manual/index.html#w2x_command) for that, then use this custom conversion specification rather than the default, built-in, DocBook conversion specification.

It all starts from menu item "File|Import DOCX" (available after you have installed the "Word To XML" add-on using "Options|Install Add-ons"). See attached screenshots:

2) output_format_screen.png

Please use the "Help" button of the wizard to get some help or take a look at the following reference manual:

"3.1. Using the setup assistant to create custom conversion specifications",

http://www.xmlmind.com/w2x/_distrib/doc/w2x_app_help/options_wizard.html

The original document is quite large and we want to split it in its composing
chapters (one of the reasons for us to switch to XML based editing), but
although assembly allows books to be treated as chapters, one of the issues I
have is that the original BOOK element is converted to CHAPTER and thus creates
a new chapter... I can manually clean up the XML file, but this requires some
(small) knowledge of XML and I want to avoid this.

This certainly makes sense.
