I use SVG images in Docbook 5 by virtue of

choosing images by double clicking. Choosing an image subsequently sets
the @fileref attribute.

I'm looking for:

1. A way to open images and videos from within XmlMind in a third party
editing applications like inkscape by i.e. holding the shift button when
clicking on it. Currently this requires to locate the very same image or
video in a drill down fashion a second time using the 3-rd party
application's file chooser.

Please click the image or video to select it and then press Ctrl+Shift-H ("Tools|Helper Application|Open Element or Attribute Content in Helper Application")

A useful variant of this command is:
"Tools|Helper Application|Edit Element or Attribute Content in Helper Application". No keyboard shortcut for this "Edit" variant.

See http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/helperApplicationMenu.html

Of course prior to doing that, you must have associated say SVG files to Inkscape using "Options|Preferences", "Helper Applications" section.

See http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/toolsOptions.html#helperApplicationsOptions

2. A simple way to trigger reloading an image (manually?) after being
altered by an external application. Currently Xmlmind will not discover
file system changes to reload stale views.

The first item probably requires a configurable binding of image types
to editor command(s).

If you use "Tools|Helper Application|Edit Element or Attribute Content in Helper Application", the image will be automatically reloaded when you'll *quit* the helper application (not when you'll save the asset from the helper application).

Otherwise, you may use Ctrl-L (View|Redraw) at any time to deeply refresh the document view and thus, reload the images.

Just another related wish: Showing a preview image for <video> elements
rather then just a standard video icon would help a lot distinguishing
assets visually.

You mean in the file chooser, in XXE's Folder tool or is it in the document view?

If you need this in the document view, then we can already do much more than you want.

As of v7.2 (November 10, 2016), DocBook 5.1 audio and video elements are rendered by embedding a media player in the styled view. This media player is similar to those found in Web browsers.

However for this to work, you must 1) author DocBook 5.1 documents, 2) use a very recent Java 1.8 runtime.
