My students propose a different filter
mechanism for choosing context dependent XML elements ("Replace",
"Insert before", "Insert", "Insert after" ...).

Currently when using e.g. Docbook starting with the filter String
"list" does not filter for orderedList, itemizedList glossList etc.
The algorithm instead exclusively retrieves elements starting with the
given filter string rather than containing it.

This may be a beginners issue lacking knowledge about the set of
available elements. I must admit though that for myself having some
experience "contain" based filters would be more appropriate.

I understand but I've never seen this before in other editors. I don't use IDEs like Eclipse, NetBeans, IntelliJ, Visual Studio, etc, so I'm a bit ignorant here. May be this exists in the search bar of a Web browser though.

Please tell your students to consider using the DocBook toolbar as often as possible. I use it all the time and rarely have to use the Edit tool. The DocBook toolbar has really everything needed to create and modify lists of all kinds. See http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/docbook/docbook_toolbar.html
