Some precisions in light of your message:
- I am using XFCE
- I changed an Xft parameter "DPI" to set it to 180, which improves most
applications rendering. Dunno if it has an impact on java swing base
font size though.

And thanks for the configuration tips, indeed it improved things somewhat.
