please find attached screenshots of XXE 6.3.0 running from a DMG install under Oracle Java 1.8u51 under OS X Yosemite 10.10.5
Thanks!
I don't want to install Apple's Java1.6, sorry... already had lots of nightmares with many Java versions on my Mac :-) I hope you can get those Apple's Java screenshots somehow...
That's right. After Apple abandoned Java, it became difficult to have several versions of Java installed on the Mac. Personally I run shell scripts to uninstall Apple Java 1.6 or Oracle Java 1.8 prior to install a different version of Java.
I think there's a few 'strange' things happening with Retina displays, no matter the application. Some applications seem to (down)scale or to be (down)scaled by OS X automatically, so you cannot always tell if you are using a "real" Retina resolution with the app. For example, if I open the attached screenshots with Apple's own "Preview" document viewer, I see the whole image, not just XXE, "better", with better "focus", than the same thing "live" (while running the application). I took the screenshots with the free "LightShot" app which, by default, has the "downscale Retina displays enabled"; however for these shots I took them with that option disabled, so you get full-resolution (2880px wide) images. Again, that's not exactly how the thing looks on the running, live, application; and the downscaled image looks even worse... During the week, I may be able to sort this Retina behavior out, by comparing with another Retina Mac of one of my friends (I'll see her on Wednesday).
The XXE screenshots are surprisingly good. The text looks better than on non-retina display despite that fact that you are using Oracle Java 1.8 which, unlike Apple Java 1.6, has a very poor font rendering. The toolbar icons are just a bit blurry. Yes, this is really surprisingly good!
There's even Retina-related display settings that may be affecting the whole thing (see the attached series named retina-settings-*.png, taken with GIMP because I need a delay to show you the resolution settings, they are in Spanish, but I hope you'll understand ;-)), and also application/OS anti-aliasing.
The settings related to the Retina display are much more extensive that I thought. I'm impressed.
Hopefully the above was clear, otherwise... you'll have to see for yourself on a running Retina computer.
Yes. It was clear. Thanks again.
I hope all this helps. Bon WE !
