I renewed my license and am trying to upgrade my existing version of
XMLmind. I have all my preferences and settings set within my current
version and would like to have those carry over when I start using 6.3.0.
When I download, it installs as a separate executable rather than an
upgrade. Is there a way to upgrade from within 5.9.0 to 6.3.0 such that I
do not lose all of my configuration/settings?
Yes but for that, you'll have to copy some files and directories by hand
from v5.9 user preferences directory to v6.3 user preferences directory.
Note that you may install v5.9 and v6.3 side by side. Simply choose a
different installation directory for v6.3.
Prerequisite:
Once v6.3 is installed, please start it in order to let it create a user
preferences directory for you. Then quit v6.3.
Now let's suppose your v5.9 user preferences directory is found in (e.g.
on Windows 7+ [*]):
C:\Users\Charles\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor5\
and your newly created v6.3 user preferences directory is found in (e.g.
on Windows 7+ [*]):
C:\Users\Charles\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor6\
Procedure:
1) Copy text file "preferences.properties" from:
C:\Users\Charles\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor5\
to:
C:\Users\Charles\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor6\
2) Copy the directories containing your configuration customizations and
your custom configurations from:
C:\Users\Charles\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor5\
to:
C:\Users\Charles\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor6\
Please do not copy any v5 *stock* add-on (e.g. xep_foprocessor) there,
as the v5 stock add-ons are likely to be obsolete.
3) Delete the cache directory of v6.3:
C:\Users\Charles\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor6\cache\
4) Restart v6.3. Select menu item "Help|About" to check that XMLmind XML
Editor has actually seen all your customizations.
5) Optionally use menu item "Options|Install Add-ons" to install in v6.3
all the stock v6 add-ons which are missing.
---
[*] XMLmind XML Editor v6 user preferences directory is:
* $HOME/.xxe6/ on Linux.
* $HOME/Library/Application Support/XMLmind/XMLEditor6/ on the Mac.
* %APPDATA%\XMLmind\XMLEditor6\ on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.
Example: C:\Documents and Settings\john\Application
Data\XMLmind\XMLEditor6\ on Windows XP.
C:\Users\john\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor6\ on Windows Vista, 7 and 8.
If you cannot see the "Application Data" directory using Microsoft
Windows File Manager, turn on Tools>Folder Options>View>File and
Folders>Show hidden files and folders.
For v5, replace "6" by "5" in the above user preferences directory names.
