I am on pro version 4.5.2. What version do I need to upgrade to in order
to have the conversion option to produce output like your example?

We have added "Convert Document|Convert to Web Help" to XMLmind XML Editor since v5.1.1 (January 10, 2012).

However we have added *stemming* support (search for "friend" and also find pages containing "friends", "friendly", etc) only since v5.8.1 (December 12, 2013).

The change history is found there:

The above Web Help example does not have an "Index" tab, but DocBook
index entries are fully supported.

Is it possible to include an "Index" tab if your document includes valid
DocBook index entries?

The Web Help will automatically have an "Index" tab if your DocBook source contains at least one <indexentry> element.

Note that we don't use the Web Help generator coming with the DocBook
XSL stylesheets. This means that

http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/1.76.1/webhelp/docs/content/ch02s01.html

does not apply to our tool.

We have developed our own Web Help generator, which we use also for
Web Help generated out of DITA documents.

Example, DITA Web Help having an "Index" tab generated using the same
Web Help generator as DocBook:

http://www.xmlmind.com/ditac/_distrib/doc/manual/webhelp/index.html

This Web Help coming from DITA is really nice. Should we consider
porting from DocBook to DITA to get better Web Help output?

I would certainly not recommend doing this.

I don't see much difference between the DocBook Web Help and the DITA Web Help.

In fact, you can probably get an almost identical Web Help for a DocBook document by:

1) passing the DocBook XSL stylesheets a few parameters like admon.graphics=1 (http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/doc/html/admon.graphics.html);

2) by tweaking the *CSS* stylesheet used to style the HTML pages comprising the generated Web Help.

Both 1) and 2) can be done from within any recent version of XMLmind XML Editor. More information in this FAQ:
