This restriction about whitespace seems to be a common pitfall. We'll
*try* (no promise) to remove it in the next release.
I looked at the code this morning. While the change is very simple, I've
decided not to commit it as this change is likely to break existing
configurations (mainly third-party configurations; may be yours).
On the other hand, the documentation

has been made much more clearer. For example, it starts with "IMPORTANT:
Common pitfalls to be avoided".
