No error message when I now convert the ditamap to javahelp, so you have indeed helped and I am (of course) grateful. However: I have selected the checkbox for "Preview result in a helper application" and no viewer opens. That's why I tried to open the .jar with a java command.

Seeing an entry for 'JHelp index' when I opened the Preferences dialog for the first time led me to assume it had been correctly set up by default apart from the reference to my own app.
