I have continued using your software XMLMind but for quite some time without
trying to convert the XML to other formats. Now, when I try to do that, I get
an error message mentioning that the XFC FO-module needs to be installed,

If you have already used XMLmind XML Editor in the past to generate RTF, .docx, etc, and never upgraded your copy, then this is absolutely not normal.

but when I try to install it as a new add-on with XMLMind, another error pops
up :
===
Reading list of add-ons
"http://www.xmlmind.net/xmleditor/_download/list.xxe_addon";...
XML error at 'http://www.xmlmind.net/xmleditor/_download/list.xxe_addon', line
1107, column 53: addon element is missing one or more required child elements:
category, name, version
===

This error is caused by an incompatibility we have introduced in "http://www.xmlmind.net/xmleditor/_download/list.xxe_addon"; starting from v5.4.1 (November 6, 2012). That is, long after the version you are using has been released. Sorry for this.

This means I can't use anymore XMLMind to produce the needed output ?

No, but it seems that your current install has been corrupted.

What happened with the earlier FO-modules like the one I successfully used to
create Word or RTF output ?

I have no clue. This never happened to any of our customers.

Has my software become obsolete and unusable without any warnings ?

No, but it seems that your current install has been corrupted.

I understand my 'free upgrade period' has since long expired, but not my
license, or am I wrong ?

No. You are right.

Anyway, please instruct me how to solve this problem and if it needs
re-acquiring (and paying) a license, please let me know.

--> I would recommend to reinstall your copy from scratch after

1) IMPORTANT: unistalling your currently installed copy;
2) IMPORTANT: manually deleting the user preferences folder.

The user preferences folder is:

    * $HOME/.xxe5/ on Linux.

    * $HOME/Library/Application Support/XMLmind/XMLEditor5/ on the Mac.

    * %APPDATA%\XMLmind\XMLEditor5\ on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.

Example: C:\Documents and Settings\john\Application Data\XMLmind\XMLEditor5\ on Windows XP. C:\Users\john\AppData\Roaming\XMLmind\XMLEditor5\ on Windows Vista, 7 and 8.

If you cannot see the "Application Data" directory using Microsoft Windows File Manager, turn on "Tools>Folder Options>View>File and Folders>Show hidden files and folders".

--> Once you have re-installed XMLmind XML Editor from scratch.

A) Start the newly installed XMLmind XML Editor.

B) Select "Options|Preferences". Select the "Install add-ons" section.

C) Click the "Reset" button and select "Use the add-on archive" from the popup menu. This changes the files found in the the "Download add-ons from these servers" list.

D) In the "Download add-ons from these servers" list,
   1) select "http://www.xmlmind.net/xmleditor/_download/list.xxe_addon";
   2) then click "Remove" as it is this file which poses a problem.

E) Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

All this is done once for all. Now please install add-ons normally using "Options|Install Add-ons".

You may want to select:
* XMLmind FO Converter XSL-FO processor plug-in
* Apache FOP 1.x XSL-FO processor plug-in
* JAI Image I/O Tools
* Apache Batik image toolkit plug-in
