Helen and all,

At my company, version control stores everything that generated a set of
published docs so that the entire doc set could be reproduced exactly, if that
ever became necessary. In our case, that consists of the DocBook XML source
files, the DocBook XSL version that generated the output plus all its
customizations, and all build scripts.

Any intermediate file type that was generated during the doc build, such as FO
files, are not stored, on the theory that they can be reconstructed exactly.

If you are generating your output using XXE's DocBook > Convert Document menu
(or the DITA equivalent), then make sure you keep accurate records, preferably
stored alongside the XML files in version control, of the exact XXE version
that you used. You probably don't need to archive an installation of XXE itself
in version control, or the XSL installed by XXE, but you might archive the
installer for the exact version you used so that it can be reinstalled. You
might also archive your XXE preferences directory. All that, plus your next
question, would allow you to exactly reproduce your docs.

It looks like you can save the current parameter group as a set with a new
name, which can then be loaded into another instance of XXE. Click "Parameter
Set" to show a menu with Reset, Load, and Save options.

Hello,

I am looking for advice about archiving xml files. These are software
documentation, and we are keeping them in SVN with the software itself. Should
any of the XSL specs be part of that archive?

What is the rationale for deciding one way or the other?
