This is a known issue of translations that is addressed by gettext.
Being a native French speaker i don't exactly know how but i recommend
you to read:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_node/gettext_150.html

and eventually search in the archives of this mailing list as it has
been discussed before.

It needs some declarations in the .po file and support in the source
code declaring the string.

Probably some people speaking a language with multiple plural forms can
shed some light on the better way to do that.
