Yes, maybe it has to be

          \def\char\n{\Cher\char\n}

or you need to insert some \protect. Again: I am not a TeX programmer... (I 
think in GNU Emacs it would work easily to insert 250 different lines 
\def'ining all Cherokee characters. Lisp is also quite nice.)
