That was the clue I needed. Thanks!

Except I edited that file to make xetex the underlying engine for xmltex and 
then ran

sudo fmtutil-sys --byengine xetex

and all went well until it reached xmltex at which time I got:

.tex UTF-8 Hyphenation patterns for Ancient Greek
(/usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/patterns/tex/hyph-grc
.tex
! Nonletter.
