I've used "xelatex -no-pdf C.tex", which is what I suppose your remark about 
using -no-pdf means? Also, I'm on TeXLive 2009, if that helps.

I'm using 1.6.9.

BTW, I'll be away from my computer till Sunday, so I won't be able to further 
test this; I'm still interested in solving the problem, though :)
