Hello, Here is a translation (see below) of this looong mail, as this list is an english list (sorry for all the french mail ;), and this mail is quite intersting imho . So, I hope it'll be better than what google's translation can do. :)
Before the translation my comments on the mail: Quite good, it would be great to add links to what still exists of Mastzi. Also, in his mail lami says is not contributing anymore to Wormux. I think it would be great to add as a note that this is not true as Wormux is hosted on OVH servers thanks to him! :) To lami: i hope you'll be back soon ! The aim is to explain the genesis of the project. I'm thinking about adding this text at the beginning of http://www.wormux.org/wiki/howto/fr/play.php (just after Presentation) (translator's note: well, i only translated the mail, this page will come later :P ) but before i'd like to know your opinion on this idea. The text in question : The serie of Worms games exists since a long time ago on various platforms. The originality of its genre immediately put it as an unforgetable model for players trying it alone, and even more for multiplayer players. At the middle of 1998, during one of my numerous Worms play on Playstation, i asked myself: is there an equivalent of this game for the operating system that i love, that is GNU/Linux and for which the variety/quality of existing games is a black point ? After some research, i found there was no equivalent, but some free project with a Worms-like philosophy had already been the object of some developement, that is "Liero like" games (real-time Worms-like). The most advanced project at this time was "Mastzi" but it was abandonned by its author. As i wanted to try myself at some programming, i began a fork of Mastzi, renamed afterward to Wormux, and corrected step by step to clone Worms. The project had no website and was coming along slowly: i was coding during my free time after university and during week-ends. When I was beginning the project, I had no idea about the extent the project would take with time. In fact the growth of popularity of the game wasn't fast. It's a little "publicity" campaign on generalists GNU/Linux websites that triggered a real passion of the community for Wormux. Contributors then came in mass, adding their 2 cents to the subject. Now, mainly because i'm working, i don't participate anymore to the developement of Wormux. But one day will come, soon I hope, where I'll be able to get back to Wormux. - _______________________________________________ Wormux-dev mailing list Wormux-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/wormux-dev
