Reboot, since it's 100% effective. In a multi-user environment, you wouldn't want to be killing everyone's shell off (if it were even possible). If it were me, I wouldn't force the reboot either. (Similar to how TortoiseGit upgrades happen; I can ignore the reboot till it suits me.)
