To wrap this up: some features weren't properly uninstalled. (In fact, the empty folders left behind after installation were also still registered as belonging to a feature of an already uninstalled product.)
The package had two bad features: - a completely empty one - a conditioned feature that did nothing but copy and rename a file (installed by another feature).
