1. History. Certificates were originally needed for SSL. It never moved out.

2. In general, we try. Some documentation is better than others. Want to
help improve it.

3. It ends up as the certificate "friendly name".

4. At one point in time, it almost kinda' worked where you could request
certificates from the key server in your domain or something like that. I'm
not sure the code works now.
