"bind" variables are wedged in between a rock and a hard place and the "assembly" variables in particular have a lot of limitations. Most of the issues are related the feature being added late in the life cycle of WiX v3 and potential for seriously negative performance impact. We'll revisit it in "WiX vNext".
Also, bind time variables are very new so we're still learning all of the user scenarios.
