I did an experiment last night on my way to a networking event in London, UK. I ran Netstumbler on a Laptop in the top box of my scooter as I rode from the City to the West end. A distance of about 2.5 miles. I picked up 50 WLANs of which 15 were unencrypted. Of these, at least 3 were using defaults out of the box and 1 looks like a consume.net style deliberately open hotspot.
