*Wikimedia Colombia, a 2024 of growth, learnings and future*
We close a cycle, we open roads

We close a cycle, we open roads: 2024 was a year full of learning and
growth for Wikimedia Colombia. We carried out more than 314 activities in
various regions of the country, from large cities such as Bogotá
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogot%C3%A1>, Medellín
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medell%C3%ADn> and Riohacha
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riohacha> to less visible territories such
as Dibulla <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dibulla,_La_Guajira>, Manaure
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manaure,_La_Guajira>, Leticia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leticia,_Amazonas> and Necoclí
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necocl%C3%AD>.

Thanks to the joint work with local communities, we managed to get more
than 2400 people to actively participate in our activities, we added 4389
new pages on Wikimedia platforms and strengthened our network of 128 allied
organizations inside and outside Colombia.

💡 These achievements are seeds for a future full of opportunities. We
would like to invite you to learn more about our impact in the 2024
Management Report

information needs to be democratized.

Memory, justice and truth. Free knowledge so as not to forget.

“When I heard the word virtual memorial I found it very poetic and it gave
me hope again.”

Colaboratorio’s participant

Wikimedia Colombia's Dignification project has fostered collaborative
memory work between victims of the conflict, civil society organizations,
Colombian state institutions and our network of volunteer collaborators. In
the last semester of 2024, our efforts focused on a pilot in Soacha
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soacha> and Bogota
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogot%C3%A1>, which consisted of structuring
public information in a database for Wikidata, contributing to make visible
non-hegemonic narratives about extrajudicial executions in these
territories.

“This space gives one back hope because one realizes that from all
latitudes, from all tools, one can continue to resist”

Colaboratory participant.

🌐 This project is not only about documenting, but also about putting
Wikimedia platforms at the service of people, building collective memory
and, contributing to truth, justice, reparation and non-repetition. Through
Wikidata and in collaboration with the National Center for Historical Memory
and other allies, we are committed to free and accessible knowledge that
keeps the country's memory alive.

We invite you to learn more about this and other projects in our Management
Report 2024: link

Open education for all people, from La Guajira to the world

📚 Education is the most powerful tool to transform the world, because it
prepares the people who will make and sustain change. In 2024 we continue
to bring this mission to the classroom with the “Let's reading and writing
Wikipedia <https://co.wikimedia.org/wiki/Leamos_y_escribamos_Wikipedia>”
project.

Thanks to all the people who supported us in Dibulla
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dibulla,_La_Guajira> and Manaure
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manaure,_La_Guajira>, in the department of La
Guajira <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Guajira_Department>, where
teachers and students learned to use Wikimedia platforms not only to read,
but also to write and build free knowledge.

Together with the Minister of National Education
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_National_Education_(Colombia)>,
the Secretary of Education of La Guajira and Bank of Republic
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_the_Republic_(Colombia)>, we were
able to train local teachers, adapt educational guides and promote
egalitarian dialogue in the classroom. This experience not only
strengthened the digital skills of the educational community, but also
enhanced the ability to tell their own stories, from their identity and
context.

🚀 We want to continue expanding this impact in more territories in
Colombia. Learn more about this and other projects in our 2024 Management
Report
<https://wikimediacolombia.org/2025/02/wikimedia-colombia-2024-of-growth/>and
join us in our mission to democratize knowledge.

The Wikimedia Movement in Colombia

The community is at the center of our work. In 2024 we closed with more
than +130 Wikimedians throughout the country. We celebrated in community
the 5th anniversary of Wikimedia Colombia, and we did it in our Wikidía,
whose version was centralized and synchronized in 4 cities of Colombia:
Bogotá <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogot%C3%A1>, Riohacha
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riohacha>, Medellín
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medell%C3%ADn>, and Leticia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leticia,_Amazonas>.

“A country called Colombia that was inhabited in two different scenarios,
one rural and one urban, as you can see there by invisible people, people
who do not recognize each other. [...]

“[people] play a role in this landscape, some producing crops, others
protecting the waters, others protecting the forests, others raising
animals, others transporting food, going to the different places to consume
it, to market it, to buy it, etc. [...] but there are still obstacles,
there is something we call different epistemologies [...], there are people
who know a lot but cannot talk to each other because they have different
categories to represent the world”

“Build epistemological routes that allow them to speak respecting their own
knowledge [...] in scenarios where no knowledge is superior to another and
where they can complement each other. That is where all the different
Wikimedia symbols appear, playing the role of connecting these knowledges
with each other [...]. Yes, the systems are registered in a local way that
would allow a fairer information to be accessible and not by centers that
control this information and manipulate its representation.

Dream of Wikidía’s participant

In 2025 we plan to continue calling Wikimedians to inspire us and build
together more projects and initiatives in Colombia. We will do it in our
WikiConf Colombia 2025.
